UMMA CENTER'S 4TH ANNUAL

"RAMADAN ADOPT A REFUGEE
FAMILY INITIATIVE"

Sunday, September 13th, 2009
Drop off time: 5:00pm, Maghrib, and then iftaar.

Location: THYSSON BANQUET HALL
3024 N. LARAMIE AVE.
CHICAGO, IL 60641

The UMMA Center's Fourth Annual Ramadan Adopt a Refugee Family Initiative is quickly approaching!

Last year, the initiative was a huge success - we helped more than 120 Chicago-land refugee families settle into their new homes. With the growing number of Muslim Refugees coming to Chicago, the UMMA Center recognizes the need to continue this important work!

The mission of the project is to connect one Muslim American Family with at least one Muslim Refugee Family by providing basic essential household items, schools supplies, toys for the children, and also sharing a meal. By allowing this connection we encourage awareness of the Refugee crisis in Chicago and present an opportunity to give during the month of Ramadan.

We also invite all volunteers/donors to join us for an Iftaar with the refugee families during the gift drop-off day. By sharing a meal during this important season, we promote more personal contact between the volunteers/donors and the refugee community as well as draw real connections with our Refugee neighbors.

All of the refugees are newly arrived within the past year, and include Iraqi and Somali families.

The Iftaar will be held on Sunday September 13th, 2009

Ways you can participate:
1. Provide a care package and drop it off at the event
(Contact Hira Siddiqui at hira@ummacenters.org for the shopping list).
2. Donate funds to provide food for the refugee Iftaar/Dinner
3. Donate money to cover the cost of a care package for a family ($200 per family)

Cosponsors for this event include: CAMP-CHICAGO, DIC, IFN, ISNS, MWA, and MSA

The UMMA Center is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to improving opportunities in employment, education, and community development for individuals living in underserved areas of Lake County such as North Chicago, Waukegan, and Zion.

Evanston Immigrant Writing Workshop
(1430 Hijri)

In an exciting new collaboration, Interfaith is working with the UIC Community Writing and Research Project to offer a free series of workshops for immigrants in the Evanston area. Please spread the word and send us participants! A flyer is attached. We thank Rev. Richard Mosley and his congregation for hosting the series at Hemenway United Methodist Church , Evanston .

The goals of the workshop series -- to take place 10 consecutive Monday nights from 7-8:30 pm beginning Sept. 21 -- are to assist immigrants to share their stories and thoughts, develop their writing (in English or their native language), and learn more about their neighbors and communities. Ultimately, Interfaith hopes that this experience will help encourage the participants to get more civically active in Evanston (or their neighboring suburb, if they live in Skokie or Wilmette ). We will award each participant a "certificate of completion" at the last session.

CWRP's work is based on the principles of popular education -- that ordinary people can effect democratic social change when they have the tools to organize, explore, analyze, evaluate, and act upon their worlds.

This work is supported by an Immigrant Integration Initiative Grant to Interfaith from The Chicago Community Trust.

Again, a flyer is attached. This is open to immigrants of any nation. I also posted information on our web site, www.interfaithhousingcenter.org. Thank you for sharing this, and we look forward to embarking on this exciting, community-building journey this fall.

Peace,
Gail

Unpublicized Tips on H1N1 Prevention-from a doctor

Friends,
Thanks to media hype about H1N1, several people who trust me have either approached or called me to advise. The hype in media about the utility of face masks and N95 respirators as a tool for general protection against H1N1 can't be deplored enough. Yesterday, a friend who listened wanted me to write down briefly what I advised so that he could tell others in similar words. Hence this short email to friends whom I have advised recently (and others whom I haven't yet). Please realize that this is not an official advice, especially the one about face masks or N95.

Chicago 2016 Youth Soccer Game at Soldier Field - April 5th

      Salam everyone -
There is going to be a very important visit of the 8 members of the International Olympic Committee, the group who will ultimately vote on the city to host the 2016 Games, during the 1st week in April (please note that 2 of these members are Arab!). The Bid committee is organizing a youth soccer game the morning of April 5th at Soldier Field and is looking to invite kids from all over Chicago to play. Obviously, I want our community to be a part of this so I am pushing to include at least 10-15 Arab-American kids to represent our community.

If you and your kids are interested in getting involved with the Olympic Bid, this is an excellent opportunity to get involved...and a great opportunity to have your kids play soccer at Soldier Field! Here are the requirements for your kids' participation:

    • Must be between the ages of 10-13 (open to boys and girls)
    • Must have played soccer before, with a general understanding of the sport, rules, requiremnts
    • Each kid must bring their own equipment (cleats, shin guards, socks, etc)
    • Kids/families are encouraged to bring country flags, soccer banners, etc.

They will be playing 2 games of (45 mins each) starting at 10:30am on Sunday, April 5th at Soldier Field. This should be a really great opportunity for you and your kids to get involved with the Olympic process!

Please let me know if you and your kids are interested and I can provide you with more information!

      Salam,
      Waleed

Ask President Obama to Pass Immigration Reform

ICIRR is happy to announce the launch of our One Nation One Dream campaign. Illinois is at the forefront of immigrant integration efforts in the nation and we look forward to the reforms that the administration and this Congress can bring about for the benefit of all in the U.S.

The “One Nation, One Dream” campaign advocates for just and humane immigration reform that provides a path to citizenship for the undocumented, reunites families by reducing backlogs, establishes safe future migration laws and protects workers. The campaign also advocates for immigrant integration that includes the expansion of English language learning programs and making U.S. citizenship affordable.

To show your support for workable solutions, send a letter to President Obama and ask him to stop raids and deportations, to make citizenship affordable and to pass just and humane immigration reform - he needs to hear from you!

      Thanks for Your Support!

Arab American Family Services is seeking new board members for the New Year

We are currently seeking to expand our Board of Directors during a time of rapid growth. Members attend six meetings per year and actively seek to introduce the organization to groups and individuals who could help support the cause and encourage and promote the growth of the organization. This is an excellent opportunity to meet and network with other great people on the Board. Members serve two-year terms.

Why is this important to our organization?
The board of directors bears the primary responsibility for ensuring that this social services organization fulfills its obligations to the law, its residents/clients, staff, volunteers, donors, and the public at large. The board is charged with protecting the organization ' s assets and providing oversight to ensure that its financial, human and material resources are used appropriately. It sets the organization ' s vision, mission and values, while establishing the broad policies and strategic direction that enable the organization to fulfill its purpose. Therefore, it is vital that new trustees/directors are proficient at strategic thinking and decision making, and are able to fulfill their responsibilities for independent, objective oversight of management and organizational performance. A passion for the organization ' s mission is a highly valued quality.

If you are passionate and committed:
Please visit our website at www.arabamericanfamilyservices.org to learn more about our organization. Please call Nareman Taha at 708-599-2237 or e-mail naremant@yahoo.com
