CCN's Area Wide Free Health Screenings & Education Programs: Winter 2007 Schedule
Dear Friends of CCN
AA
Posted below is the schedule of free Health Screenings and Health Education
programs of CCN for the next three months. In order for us to continue to provide these programs as well as to expand them to benefit more people, we are now requesting your help. We will need volunteer assistance at three levels:
Level 1: Physician Help
We need a minimum of two physicians at each screening to supervise the
work of medical students and provide counseling and consultations to the people
getting screened. This is a two hour commitment on a Sunday
from 10am-12pm
(usually) or from 11am-1pm (sometimes) as per the schedule posted. Please choose
a date that will work with your
schedule and let us know. We request your
participation once every three months.
Level 2: Medical Student / Nursing Student
Help
We need
2-4 medical / nursing
students to volunteer for each of the screening
sessions. We will teach you how to take blood pressures and do the blood sugar
checks. To volunteer please call us and we will get you connected with our Student
Volunteer Program coordinators who are medical students themselves. A 2 hour
commitment on a Sunday, once every three months is requested.
Level 3: CCN Enrollment Help
We need ordinary non medical volunteers, at least 2-3, at each screening,
to assist
with enrolling people in the CCN program. We will show you the basic paperwork
that needs to be completed by the enrollees and how you can help them to file the
application forms. Again please pick a date from the schedule for the next three
months and let us know your availability. A 2 hour commitment
on a Sunday, once
every three months is requested.
In addition we also need Dentists and Optometrists. If you one of them and are
interested to help
please
let us know.
Thank you for your support.

Celebrating the amazing achievements of our youth
We are delighted to share some exciting achievements by our community’s youth.
A few weeks ago Nadia Razaq, a student at Loyola Medical School was notified by Loyola that she has been named the 2007-2008 recipient of the Dr. Ralph P. Leischner MD, Memorial Scholarship. The award is for $36,600 given only to one student per year for the full tuition of the 4th year studies at the medical school.
The Loyola committee remarked, "In selecting you from among the students of Class 08, Loyola wishes to recognize the professional and personal qualities that you have demonstrated in an exemplary fashion, which gave evidence that you merited this award."
Nadia has been working very closely with CCN for the last six months as part of her Schweitzer Fellowship. At CCN she is setting up translator services to enable CCN to serve communities with different language preferences. She has also helped in developing brochures and other promotional materials in Spanish and Arabic to better serve these communities. Prior to joining CCN as a Schweitzer Fellow, Nadia spent time working in Africa gaining valuable first hand experience, regarding the many health care challenges people face in that continent. Nadia hopes to continue her work for the underserved in the area of healthcare through her future participation in Schweitzer for Life programs.
Nadia is the daughter of Br. Mohammed Razaq, long time community worker and current Board member and Treasurer of Islamic Foundation in Villa Park, IL.
Today we received the second exciting news about the selection of Isra Bhatty as a Rhodes Scholar, an honor given to only 32 in the nation this year, for their outstanding scholarship, leadership and community service. Isra was actively involved with IMAN during her college years at U of C and Princeton. Along with the honor comes a two to three year study at Oxford University, England with all expenses for tuition and living paid.
Below we copy a write up from the Chicago Tribune telling her story.
Isra is the daughter of Br. Javed Bhatty, an interfaith activist and current Board member of the Muslim Community Center in Chicago.
We applaud the amazing achievements of these two young members of our community as we salute them and wish them continued success in the future.

U. of C. student gets Rhodes scholarship
By Alexa Aguilar | Tribune staff reporter
November 19, 2007
Isra Bhatty's academic prowess is obvious: she graduated from the University of Chicago, spent time at Princeton and is in law school at Yale.
But Bhatty thinks she was chosen as a Rhodes scholar this weekend because she is just as likely to be working with prisoners, playing football or writing poetry as hitting the books.
"I think Rhodes looks for well-rounded people," she said. "And I have interests from hip-hop to football to being nerdy."
Bhatty, 23, of Glenview was one of three U. of C. students and the only Illinoisan selected this weekend for the prestigious scholarship, which provides two or three years of study, all expenses paid, at Oxford University in England.
With three recipients, the U. of C. tied Stanford University for the highest number of student recipients this year. In all, 32 nationwide were selected from 764 applicants.
"I'm a little overwhelmed by it," Bhatty said.
Bhatty, who graduated from the U. of C. in 2006, is now in her first year of law school at Yale University. She'll travel across the Atlantic to study social interventions, with a focus on programs for people of color, immigrants and substance abusers, she said.
In England, she's looking forward to working with the country's South Asian and Muslim populations.
"I've never liked doing more with books than humans," Bhatty said.
While a student, she was chairwoman of the Inner City Muslim Action Network, visiting prisons and working on behalf of immigrants. She also translates for detainees at Guantanamo Bay, working electronically and by phone. Her parents are originally from Pakistan, she said, and she speaks fluent Urdu.
While her passion in college was criminal justice reform, Bhatty, a huge Chicago Bears fan, also organized a women's football team. A hijab-wearing female player garnered some double takes, she said, especially when onlookers "saw that I was actually good."

The life and death of Anadou Cisse: Born in Senegal, Africa, killed in Hyde Park, USA
Another innocent life is lost on a street in America, where senseless violence rules, fueled by the free flow of guns and the power of a gun lobby whose passion for guns over rules reason or remorse.
Br. Ahmed Rehab's touching tribute to this young member of our community, on his untimely and violent death, is inded cause for great sadness and concern to all who believe in the safety and sanctity of life. We echo his call for greater participation by our community in the CAPS program through our local Islamic Centers or neighborhoods. We also believe believe in greater advocacy for gun control and stronger support for Mayor Daley's initiatives to curb the easy access to guns in Illinois.
Community Builders Chicago
www.mycommunitybuilders.com
Amadou Cisse is not a statistic.
Amadou was shot and killed on the Hyde Park campus of the University of Chicago early Monday morning. This was just weeks after he had successfully defended his Ph.D thesis in Chemistry at the top-rated university.
Amadou started life with little advantage. He was raised in a modest home in Senegal, Africa, exacerbated all the more by his father's early death. But Amadou invested his hopes in the most precious gift God had afforded him, his mind. He won a scholarship worlds away to a U.S high school, went on to college and earned degrees in chemistry, physics and mathematics.
The Chicago Tribune reported that "At the U. of C., Cisse was known as much for his hard work as his passion for his religion, Islam" ("U. of C. reels from hour of violence," Page 1, Nov. 20).
During his lifetime and despite all odds, Cisse did his family proud, Africa proud and Islam proud - he was a direct product of all three. He also did America proud - he was also a direct product of America. Amadou was a minority three times over. He was black, Muslim and an immigrant. In a climate where each of those are often demonized, politicized, or rendered suspicious, he may have been prejudged by the ugly half of America. But prejudice is not the world he saw in America. He saw only opportunity, just as the beautiful part of America had seen in him.
As we constantly hear the claptrap about the potential radicalization of Muslim youth, or witness the subtle vilification of Black youth or dark-skinned immigrants, we see in Amadou a more accurate representation of the real values a young Black Muslim immigrant might typically represent: intelligence, responsibility, aspiration -- and vulnerability. This is equally likely whether a PhD from the U. of C. or a cab driver.
His achievements were a reminder to all of us of the value of most who come to our shores: not a threat, but an asset. Amadou's story is the best and worst of what we have to offer. In our top institutions, we afforded Amadou a ticket to the top. And in our unsafe inner-city streets, we afforded him his demise.
Fighting urban crime and cleaning up our streets is not just the police force's job; it is our collective responsibility. We cannot sit idly by as our top treasure - our youth - are taken down in senseless moments made possible by a lackadaisical community approach to urban safety.
In Amadou's honor, we call on Chicagoans to make a resolution for the year 2008 to do their part in changing that by volunteering for CAPS, the City of Chicago's valuable Community Policing program. Let our great city remain a beacon of hope and a place of opportunity to people around the world, but let it also be a leading city in the fight against street crime.
Our hearts go out to Amadou's family, friends, and the University of Chicago community.
